Competition Winner Playground Opening   You are here: Home » News Detail

Wouldham All Saints School officially opened their new primary school playground on 19th March 2018. Having won a nationwide matched funding competition run by playground supplier KOMPAN, the school used the funds to create a memorial superhero training playground to celebrate the life of Harry, a student in year 8 who sadly passed away last year.

The playground opening was a day of celebration. Parents came in to view their children’s new school before heading out to the playground for the unveiling of the new memorial equipment. Not even the cold could stop the Year 4’s from testing it out.

Carl Fitter, Head Teacher at Wouldham says, “We are very much an outside school, the whole ethos of our school is to get children active and outside. Part of that is creating a space where children will naturally go, run around, climb, slide, roll and just challenge themselves in a safe environment”. This could definitely be seen on the day, with students, parents and teachers alike braving the cold to climb up the towers nets and stairs to slide down the fireman’s pole. After being announced as the winners of the Matched Funding Competition in 2017, Wouldham involved pupils to decide what additional equipment they wanted with their new budget.

Darcy was elected to be the student Head Teacher for the day and was involved in the planning process for the new playground “There was an election and I was chosen by the whole school… we had a meeting about the new playground and someone from KOMPAN came in and showed me the designs”. Reiss in Year 5 explains the moment they were told they had won the competition. “So we had just finished break, and Mr Fitter said we won a competition for a playground in memory of Harry, and we just thought it was brilliant!”

Mr Fitter says “We are really pleased we entered the competition because we got an amazing playground at the end of it and we got a lot more than we could have possibly have hoped to get just with our own funding alone I would encourage anybody to enter a competition like this everything… and get the best that you possibly can.” It is a very exciting time for the school, as the students and faculty get used to life in their new buildings and new playground dedicated to Harry.

Steve Sylvester, KOMPAN’s Managing Director says “We are really delighted to see such a worthy winner of last year’s KOMPAN Match Funding Competition. KOMPAN have kicked off 2018 with another matched funding competition to give more schools and councils the opportunity to double their budget and help to create happier and healthier communities”
